«Hombres de maíz» is the novel by Miguel Ángel Asturias in a critical edition, published by University of Pittsburgh Press in hardback (764 pages, in Spanish).
The novel confronts two ways of understanding maize: as sacred food for the Maya peoples or as a commercial product that exploits the land. Between reality and legend, it shows transformations of characters, the magic of a herbalist and the persecuted female figure, denouncing the effects of capitalism on Guatemalan communities.
Critical edition coordinated by Gerald Martin, number 21 of the Archivos Collection. Published in 1993.
For readers of Latin American narrative and for scholars of Asturias's work.
