For generations, the lower clans of Thorbardin have hated the hylars, the ancestral governors of the vast underground kingdom. Now, the hylar army has gone away to face the Knights of Takhisis and the dark dwarves see their opportunity coming. Besieged in their fortress, the Tree of Life, the hylars struggle to survive. Magic and madness haunt them on all sides, while the theiwars, the daergars and the kiars insist on their attack, bloodthirsty. The forces of Chaos join the battle against the dwarves, and hopes fade when the hylars have to face the supreme betrayal and see the specter of Thorbardin's ultimate doom appear.
