«El niño descalzo» is the autobiographical novel by Juan Cruz Ruiz, published by Alfaguara in paperback (304 pages, in Spanish).
The novel interweaves three childhoods: that of the author's grandson, who discovers the world with wonder; that of Eva, the daughter; and that of the grandfather narrator himself, who evokes the memories time has left in him. Each discovery by the child awakens a family memory in the grandfather, in a reflection on childhood, the passage of time and the art of living.
Alfaguara's Hispánica collection, published in 2015; author awarded the Premio de Canarias de Literatura, the Premio Azorín de Novela and the Premio Nacional de Periodismo Cultural.
For those seeking an emotional read about memory, childhood and the bond between grandparents and grandchildren, and for followers of Juan Cruz Ruiz.
