In 'The Monarch of Shadows,' Javier Cercas returns to the Spanish Civil War to explore his family's past. The novel narrates the search for the lost trail of Manuel Mena, the author's great-uncle, who fought in Franco's army and died in the Battle of the Ebro. Through this investigation, Cercas reflects on the legacy of war, heroism, and family secrets. A personal and collective exploration that confronts the reader with the difficulty of assuming the most uncomfortable past.
Spanish novelist and essayist, author of Soldiers of Salamis, The Anatomy of a Moment and the Terra Alta trilogy.
