«El monarca de las sombras» is the historical novel by Javier Cercas, published by Debolsillo in paperback (288 pages, in Spanish).
Following Soldados de Salamina, Javier Cercas delves into family memory: his great-uncle Manuel Mena, an almost anonymous young man who enlisted in Franco's army in 1936 and died at the Battle of the Ebro two years later. The novel reflects on heroism, the persistence of the dead, and the difficulty of coming to terms with an uncomfortable past.
