The Misanthrope is the most complete work of Menander that endures to this day. The story focuses on Cnemón, a grumpy and distrustful old man who has retired to the countryside. There live his wife, his son Gorgias and a slave in separate houses, while Cnemón lives with his daughter in another house. The god Pan places the viewer in the background of the dramatic action.
