After an earthquake, Lake Kleifarvatn recedes and reveals a skeleton with a hole in its skull and a Russian radio tied as ballast. Inspector Erlendur links the find to a salesman who disappeared years earlier and to idealistic students who travelled to Leipzig in the communist era. The mistakes of the past surface in Iceland.
