«El día antes de la felicidad» is the novel by Erri De Luca, published by Siruela in paperback (132 pages, in Spanish).
In 1950s Naples, an orphan learns from Don Gaetano, a man of a thousand trades who can read minds. Between street challenges and the gaze toward a window, he grows up with the stories of a city that suffered war and occupation. His path to maturity mixes ritual, passion and defiance, and leaves the question of happiness.
Volume 142 of Siruela's Nuevos Tiempos collection. Translation by Carlos Gumpert; original title: «Il giorno prima della felicità».
For readers of contemporary fiction and coming-of-age stories with a historical backdrop.

Enrico "Erri" De Luca is an Italian novelist, translator and poet. He has been recognized by critic Giorgio De Rienzo of Corriere della Sera as "the writer of the decade". He is also known for his opposition to the Lyon-Turin high speed train line, and is being sued for having called for its sabotage. On 19 October 2015, De Luca was cleared of inciting criminal damage. He reacted to the not-guilty verdict declaring that "An injustice has been avoided."
