«El alcalde de Zalamea» is the play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, published by Anaya Infantil y Juvenil in paperback (168 pages, in Spanish).
The drama, a mature work of Spanish Baroque theatre, shows the abuses of soldiers on the towns where they are billeted. In Zalamea, Captain don Álvaro attacks the family of the farmer Pedro Crespo; once appointed mayor, he dispenses a justice that pits inherited honour against personal dignity.

Recommended for secondary school students and young people aged 14 and over, as well as for those interested in classical Spanish theatre.
