Spanish playwright and poet of the Golden Age, author of Fuente Ovejuna, The Knight from Olmedo and The Dog in the Manger.
Around 1,800 plays are attributed to him, though only some 400 complete texts survive.
He was known as the 'Phoenix of Wits' and the 'Monster of Nature', nicknames coined by Cervantes.
He led a turbulent love life that is reflected in much of his poetry.
He was ordained a priest in 1614 without ever giving up his love affairs or the theatre.
He set the canon for the Spanish national theatre with Arte nuevo de hacer comedias (1609).
