Clara married Miguel at eighteen, a man whose psychological impediment prevented the marriage from being consummated. Fifteen years later she discovers from the newspaper obituaries that her husband has died: she is finally free. The novel recounts how she overcomes her guilt and decides to rebuild her life.

The novel was a finalist for the Premio Planeta in 1977 and was published in the Premio Planeta collection. Ángel Palomino (1919-2004) was an author of twentieth-century Spanish narrative.
