«Deus, o Acaso e a Necessidade» is the philosophical essay by Keith Ward, published by Publicações Europa-América in paperback (208 pages, in Portuguese).
Keith Ward responds to Richard Dawkins's arguments in «The Selfish Gene» and «The Blind Watchmaker» to argue that modern science does not rule out the existence of God. Drawing on biology and physics, he analyses the ideas of chance and necessity, and maintains that faith and reason can coexist. The book invites reflection on the origin, purpose and place of the divine in the universe.
The Portuguese edition, from 1998, was published by Publicações Europa-América; the subtitle presents it as a response to «The Selfish Gene» and «The Blind Watchmaker».
For those interested in the debate between science and religion and in philosophical replies to Richard Dawkins.
Keith Ward is an English philosopher and theologian. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a priest of the Church of England. He was a canon of Christ Church, Oxford, until 2003. Comparative theology and the relationship between science and religion are two of his main topics of interest.
