«Der Reiher» is the novel by Giorgio Bassani published by Piper Verlag GmbH in paperback (227 pages, in German).
Set in the winter of 1947, it recounts the hunting outing of Edgardo Limentani, a former landowner, through the marshy landscapes of the Po delta. The contemplation of a heron and the stillness of the surroundings turn the day into an intimate confrontation with the emptiness of his existence.
