«Cuentos de Odesa y otros relatos» is a collection of short stories by Isaak Bábel, published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (190 pages, in Spanish).
The stories are set in the Jewish quarter of Moldavanka, in Odessa at the beginning of the 20th century, and centre on Bénia Krik, king of thieves, among smugglers, carters and outcasts. With humour, violence and lyricism, Bábel portrays the poverty, injustice and vitality of a community marked by Jewish tradition and the underworld.
Volume 67 of the Biblioteca Fundamental de Nuestro Tiempo collection, translated by José Fernández Sánchez.
For readers of 20th-century Russian fiction and short stories with a popular setting.
