Set in central Africa at the end of the Pleistocene, it follows a horde of ape-men who, guided by Edward, improve their survival with fire, hunting and exogamy. His brother Vania rejects progress and defends a natural life, while Ernest, Edward's son, wonders whether these innovations threaten the horde.
The Spanish translation is by Nora Muchnik; the original edition was published in 1960 under the title The Evolution Man.
For readers seeking a satire on human evolution with humour that combines science, prehistory and social criticism.
