«Cinco horas con Mario» is the novel by Miguel Delibes, published by Destino in paperback (249 pages, in Spanish).
Carmen, a conservative middle-class woman, keeps vigil over her husband Mario's corpse for five hours. Her monologue reviews their marriage and its differences: his idealism versus her pragmatism. Through the passages underlined in Mario's Bible, Carmen reveals reproaches, frustrations, and a critique of the Spain of that time.
Originally published in 1966, it is volume 281 of Destino's Áncora y Delfín collection.
A classic of twentieth-century Spanish literature, for readers who appreciate interior monologue, psychological portraiture, and social critique.
