«Calaveres atònites» is a short story collection by writer Jesús Moncada, published by labutxaca in paperback (256 pages, in Catalan).
Calaveres atònites brings together several stories around Mallol Fontcalda, a young Barcelona lawyer who in the 1950s travels to Mequinensa hoping to find a quiet place to prepare for civil service exams. No sooner does he arrive than he becomes caught up in unexpected situations and in the lives of singular inhabitants who exceed his expectations.
Work originally published in 1999; this labutxaca edition came out on 12 July 2007.
Recommended for readers of contemporary narrative in Catalan and of stories set in Mequinensa.
Jesús Moncada i Estruga was a narrator and translator. His work is a re-creation, somewhere between realism and fantasy, of the mythical past of the old town of Mequinenza -now submerged beneath the waters of the river Ebro-.
