«Blanco sobre negro» is the autobiography of Rubén Gallego, published by Alfaguara in hardback (192 pages, in Spanish).
Rubén Gallego, born in Moscow in 1968 with cerebral palsy, was separated from his mother and treated as an orphan. In these short stories, Gallego recounts his childhood and youth in Soviet orphanages and asylums for the «unpresentable» relatives of communist leaders. It is the portrait of a society that hid any difference and demanded happiness.
The original Russian title is «Beloe na chernom»; the Spanish translation is by Ricardo San Vicente. It won the Russian Booker Prize in 2003.
For readers of memoirs and survival stories interested in Soviet history and testimonies of resilience.
