«Atala / René» is a volume bringing together two short novels by François-René de Chateaubriand, published by Planeta in paperback (139 pages, in Spanish).
Atala and René form a diptych: their protagonists live parallel and contrasting destinies in the face of the same conflict, that of the individual between passion and loss. The action mixes wild America and civilized Europe, with solitude and the clash between civilization and nature as a backdrop.
Volume 77 of Clásicos Universales Planeta, with an introduction by Gabriel Oliver and translations by Sebastián Juan Arbó and Julio Gómez de la Serna. The novels were originally published in 1801.
For readers of French Romantic literature and for those interested in editions with introductory material.

François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand was a French writer, politician, diplomat and historian who influenced French literature of the 19th century. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1822 to 1824 and as the French ambassador to Sweden, Prussia, the United Kingdom, and the Papal States.
