«Amanecer en el desierto» is the autobiography of Waris Dirie with Jeanne D'Haem (Círculo de Lectores, hardback, 249 pages, in Spanish).
Waris Dirie returns to Somalia and rediscovers her roots; amid memories of her nomadic childhood and her career as an international model, she pays tribute to her mother and her people's culture, and takes stock of her work as a UN ambassador.
Original title: Desert Dawn. It continues her previous book Desert Flower.
For readers of memoirs and biographies interested in Africa, women's rights, and stories of reconciliation with one's origins.
Waris Dirie is a Somali model, author, actress and human rights activist in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). From 1997 to 2003, she was a UN special ambassador against FGM. In 2002 she founded her own organization in Vienna, the Desert Flower Foundation. She has won numerous awards recognizing her work on eradicating FGM, including the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (2007).
