How do we question our identity in the aging process? From an anthropological perspective, this book shows how the relational context in which we live encourages us to think about who we are and how we see ourselves as we age. The book is based on empirical research on the social experience of aging in two distinct ethnographic contexts: a peri-urban village in the center of the country and an urban setting in the city of Porto. In these studies, the question of identity is framed as an experience strongly marked by dilemmas, as there is a confrontation between multiple—and sometimes contradictory—interpretations of life and the life course.
Through the presentation of life narratives, the text shows how old age is apprehended by social actors, experienced in the body, and lived in tension, addressing the way in which experiences are socially and culturally elaborated in old age, sometimes inaugurating new possibilities of being and living.
