He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 9 November 1934, into a Jewish family of Ukrainian descent.
He presented and co-wrote Cosmos: A Personal Voyage in 1980, PBS's most-watched series with over 500 million viewers in 60 countries.
He championed the famous Pale Blue Dot image taken by Voyager 1 from 6 billion kilometres away in 1990.
In 1995 he published The Demon-Haunted World, a manifesto against pseudoscience and in favour of the scientific method.
Asteroid 2709 Sagan and the Mars Pathfinder landing site, named the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, were named after him.
