He was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1973 and took almost fifteen years to publish his first novel.
He holds a master's degree in philosophy and teaches literature at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The Name of the Wind (2007) won the Quill Award for best science fiction and fantasy book in 2007.
In 2010 he published the second volume of the trilogy, The Wise Man's Fear, which topped fantasy bestseller lists for years.
In 2011 he founded the charity Worldbuilders, which has raised millions of dollars for Heifer International.
