She was born in Miami, Florida, on 9 June 1956.
Before turning to fiction she worked as a journalist and in the office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia.
Postmortem (1990), the first Scarpetta novel, won the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony and Macavity awards for crime fiction.
In the non-fiction book Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper – Case Closed she argues that painter Walter Sickert was the Ripper.
Her publishers report that she has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.
