He was born in Orihuela into a peasant family and left school at fifteen to mind the family goats.
He was befriended by Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Vicente Aleixandre, who encouraged him to publish.
He fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War as a political commissar and poet.
He died of tuberculosis in 1942 in Alicante prison, having had his death sentence commuted to imprisonment.
His poem Nanas de la cebolla, written in prison for his son, is one of the best-known Spanish poems of the twentieth century.
