Born on 12 November 1929 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany; died on 28 August 1995.
His debut Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver (1960) won the German Children's Literature Award.
Momo was published in 1973 and The Neverending Story in 1979.
He publicly distanced himself from the 1984 film adaptation of The Neverending Story.
He was the son of surrealist painter Edgar Ende, whose work was banned by the Nazi regime.
