Jonathan Wyatt Latimer was an American crime writer known his novels and screenplays. Before becoming an author, Latimer was a journalist in Chicago.

Jonathan Latimer was born in Chicago in 1906 and became a key figure in the development of the hard-boiled genre.

His most iconic character is the private investigator Bill Crane, who features in several of his novels.

The publication of his novel Solomon's Vineyard was delayed by nine years in the United States due to controversy over its content.

Throughout his prolific career, he wrote a total of 34 works exploring suspense and investigation.

Beyond his novels, he worked as a screenwriter and spent five years writing for the Perry Mason television series.
