He was born in Newburgh, New York, on 22 March 1947.
Before turning to full-time writing he was creative director and CEO of the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in North America.
His debut, The Thomas Berryman Number (1976), won the Edgar Award for best first novel.
He created detective Alex Cross, the lead of Along Came a Spider (1993) and more than thirty subsequent novels.
He routinely works with co-authors to sustain his output, including books with Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton.
