He was born in Stockholm on 3 February 1948 and grew up in the small town of Sveg in northern Sweden.
He spent much of his adult life between Sweden and Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, where he ran the Teatro Avenida.
His debut novel, Bergsprängaren, appeared in 1973; the first Wallander book, Faceless Killers, came out in 1991.
The Wallander series was adapted for Swedish television and in a BBC production starring Kenneth Branagh.
He died of cancer in Gothenburg on 5 October 2015.
