He was born in Newark, New Jersey, on 4 January 1962.
He studied political science at Amherst College, where his classmates included future novelist Dan Brown.
His first book, Play Dead, appeared in 1990; the Myron Bolitar series began in 1995.
He was the first author to win all three of the major American crime-fiction awards: Edgar, Shamus and Anthony.
He has signed deals with Netflix to adapt many of his novels into international series.
