Vasily Semyonovich Grossman was a Soviet writer and journalist. Born to a Jewish family in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire, Grossman trained as a chemical engineer at Moscow State University, earning the nickname Vasya-khimik because of his diligence as a student. Upon graduation, he took a job in Stalino in the Donets Basin. In the 1930s he changed careers and began writing full-time, publishing a number of short stories and several novels.

Vasily Grossman began his professional career as an engineer before becoming one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.
During World War II, he worked as a war correspondent, which allowed him to experience the horrors of the front line firsthand.
He was one of the first chroniclers to document the horrors of Nazi death camps after the liberation of Treblinka.
His masterpiece, Life and Fate, was confiscated by the KGB in 1961 and deemed so dangerous that it was said it could not be published for centuries.
The manuscript of his major novel survived because it was photographed on microfilm and smuggled out of the Soviet Union.
