She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on 24 February 1971.
The daughter of two academics, she studied at the University of Kansas and worked as a film and TV critic at Entertainment Weekly.
Her debut novel, Sharp Objects, won the 2007 Edgar Award for best first novel.
Gone Girl (2012) spent more than eight weeks at number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
She wrote the screenplay for the 2014 film adaptation of Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher.
