In 1849 he was sentenced to death and reprieved at the last moment before the firing squad; he then spent four years in a Siberian prison camp.
He was addicted to roulette and wrote The Gambler in under a month to pay off his debts.
He suffered from epilepsy and gave the condition to characters such as Prince Myshkin in The Idiot.
He dictated much of The Brothers Karamazov to his second wife, the stenographer Anna Grigoryevna.
He died of a pulmonary haemorrhage in 1881 and thousands attended his funeral in Saint Petersburg.
