He wrote the Divine Comedy in Florentine Tuscan, a choice that became the foundation of modern Italian.
He idealised Beatrice Portinari, a Florentine woman he saw only a few times in life and who leads him through Paradise in the Comedy.
He was exiled from Florence in 1302 for political reasons and never returned to his native city.
He died in Ravenna in 1321 and his remains are still there, despite repeated Florentine demands for their return.
In 2021 the 700th anniversary of his death was celebrated with cultural events around the world.
