Biography

John Dann MacDonald was an American writer of novels and short stories. A prolific author of crime and suspense novels, many set in his adopted home of Florida, he was one of the most successful American novelists of his time. MacDonald sold an estimated 70 million books.

John D. MacDonald was an incredibly prolific author who wrote a total of 283 works throughout his career.

His iconic character Travis McGee became the protagonist of one of his most acclaimed series, set in Florida.

Before dedicating himself to literature, MacDonald earned an MBA from the prestigious Harvard University in 1939.

His writing career began by chance when his wife submitted a short story he had written for her to a magazine.

During World War II, he served in the Office of Strategic Services, an experience that shaped his life before he began writing full-time.
