He was born in Belfast in 1898 and lost his mother when he was only nine, a bereavement that shaped his religious sensibility.
From 1954 he was Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge.
He belonged to the Inklings literary group, where he shared readings with J.R.R. Tolkien.
He declared himself an atheist in his youth, but converted to Christianity in 1931 after long conversations with Tolkien.
Between 1950 and 1956 he published the seven novels that make up The Chronicles of Narnia.
