He was born in Łódź, Poland in 1948 and worked for years as a sales representative in foreign trade before turning to writing.
In 1986 he won a short story contest in the magazine Fantastyka with The Witcher, the first text featuring Geralt of Rivia.
He published his first Geralt short story collection, The Last Wish, in 1993.
The video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, based on his characters, won numerous game-of-the-year awards in 2015.
In 2019 Netflix launched the series The Witcher, an adaptation of his saga starring Henry Cavill.
