Biography

Alexandre Herculano de Carvalho e Araújo was a Portuguese novelist and historian.

Alexandre Herculano was the key figure who introduced Romanticism into Portuguese literature.

His national prestige in Portugal was so immense that he was compared to the great Victor Hugo in France.

Beyond being a novelist and poet, he was a rigorous historian who used his pen to defend liberal ideas.

His work Eurico, o Presbítero is considered one of the fundamental pieces of his prolific literary career.

Through his writings, he bravely denounced the absolutism and political intolerance of his time.
