«Vite scritte» is Javier Marías's collection of portraits and biographical essays, published by Einaudi in paperback (214 pages, in Italian).
Portraits of famous and lesser-known writers, seen not through their works but through their lives: passions, hatreds, obsessions, greatnesses and miseries. Marías treats them as novel characters, with two rules: they must not be alive and must not be Spanish. Includes Faulkner, Conrad, Henry James, Wilde or Mishima, and singular women such as Lady Hester Stanhope, plus famous photographs of authors.
With a translation by Glauco Felici, it is volume 861 of Einaudi's Saggi series, published in June 2004.
For readers interested in the lives of writers, in literature understood as a craft, and in books about books.
