«Verte» is the fantasy novel by Marie Desplechin, published by L'Ecole des Loisirs in paperback (180 pages, in French).
Verte, daughter of a witch, shows no talent for the craft, to her mother Ursule's despair. At eleven, she would rather be normal, get married, and be interested in the boys in her class, and she scorns the potion to poison the neighbours' dog. Ursule entrusts her to her grandmother Anastabotte, and the results exceed her expectations, perhaps too much.
First book in the «Verte» series, comprising three titles; originally published in 1996.
Recommended for child and young readers aged 9 to 12, especially those seeking fantasy and witchcraft stories.
