Immerse yourself in the mind of Hanta, a man who for thirty-five years has worked destroying books and reproductions of paintings in a paper shredder. In each bale of paper he prepares, books, lithographs and his own effort coexist. For Hanta, these books are much more than paper; they are the accumulated knowledge of humanity throughout the centuries, knowledge that he has acquired through his work. As he wanders through Prague, Hanta reflects on his life and the teachings of the great masters such as Lao Tse, Nietzsche, Hegel and Kant. Bohumil Hrabal, with his characteristic prose, constructs a fable about artistic and literary creation, love, solitude, creation, destruction and the cruelty of time.
