This book tells the story of a Jewish girl and her relationship with her mother. The little girl is hidden in a Catholic convent outside Rome to escape deportation. She is attracted to the "good God of the Christians and not the always angry one of the Jews", by the security of that unthreatened Catholic world, by a slight mystical vertigo ambiguously encouraged by some nun, by the hope of interpreting the Virgin in the Christmas play. But when she is about to embrace the new faith, the mother intervenes, "tiger, lioness, who has little time for books and synagogues because she must defend her daughters", her life but also her threatened identity. Only at the end of the war will she be able to say to her daughter: you are not a Jewish girl, you are just a girl.
