«Trece rosas rojas» is the historical essay by journalist Carlos Fonseca, published by Ediciones Martínez Roca in hardback (320 pages, in Spanish).
It reconstructs the story of thirteen women, seven of them minors, shot in Madrid in the early hours of 5 August 1939, at the start of the postwar period. Drawing on the letters they wrote themselves and the testimonies of their relatives, the author investigates their brief lives, their growing political involvement and the events surrounding their arrest, trial and execution.
Published in 2004; it was adapted into a film by Emilio Martínez Lázaro in 2007. The cover presents it as «El libro en el que se basó la película».
For readers interested in the contemporary history of Spain, historical memory and repression during the postwar period.
