«The Sale of the Late King's Goods» is the historical essay by Jerry Brotton, published by Pan Macmillan in paperback (436 pages, in English).
After the English Civil War and the regicide, Cromwell sold nearly two thousand paintings, tapestries, statues and drawings belonging to Charles I to pay debts and fund the army. Brotton traces the dispersal across London, Venice, Mantua, Madrid, Paris and the Low Countries and analyses how art and power intertwine at the origin of the present Royal Collection.
The subtitle of the work is «Charles I & His Art Collection». The book was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2006; Pan Macmillan edition, 2007.
Reading for those interested in art history, the court of Charles I and seventeenth-century England.
Jerry Brotton is a British historian. He is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London, a television and radio presenter and a curator.
