The Promise is a novel by South African author Damon Galgut, published in 2021. The novel tells the story of the Swart family, a white South African family living on a farm near Pretoria. The family gathers for Ma's funeral, and the younger children, Anton and Amor, detest everything the family stands for, not least the failed promise to the Black woman who has worked for them her whole life. Over the decades, the promise to give Salome her own house and land remains unfulfilled. The novel explores themes of family, race, class, and the history of South Africa.
Damon Galgut is a South African novelist and playwright. He was awarded the 2021 Booker Prize for his novel The Promise, having previously been shortlisted for the award in 2003 and 2010.
