«The Amateur Marriage» is Anne Tyler's contemporary fiction novel, published by Alfred A. Knopf in hardback (306 pages, in English).
After meeting in a Baltimore grocery store during World War II, Michael and Pauline marry on impulse. Their opposing characters make the marriage a constant mismatch, and the novel follows the couple and their family over decades, amid social changes and small domestic battles.
It is Anne Tyler's sixteenth novel, published in 2004, and was longlisted for the Orange Prize.
A read for book clubs and for those seeking literary fiction about marriage, family, and everyday life.
