«Stig of the Dump» is Clive King's children's fantasy novel, published by Puffin Classics in paperback (256 pages, in English).
Barney, a lonely eight-year-old boy, falls into an abandoned chalk pit and discovers a cave inhabited by a hairy creature wearing a rabbit skin who speaks in grunts. He calls him Stig. A friendship grows between them: together they rummage in the dump, improve the cave and have wild, very practical adventures.
Originally published in 1963, this 1993 edition belongs to the Puffin Modern Classics collection and includes the original illustrations by Edward Ardizzone.
Aimed at child readers aged 7 to 9, it also serves as a first approach to reading in English.

David Clive King was an English author best known for his children's book Stig of the Dump (1963). He served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in the last years of the Second World War and then worked for the British Council in a wide range of overseas postings from which he later drew inspiration for some of his novels.
