Claudia Martin, a successful headmistress of a school for young ladies in Bath, is forced to accept the escort of Joseph, the Marquess of Attingsborough, to London. Despite having given up on love, Claudia feels irresistibly drawn to Joseph, although she knows that an affair could be a mistake. Joseph, meanwhile, seeks a suitable wife to secure an heir for his dukedom, but his heart begins to beat for Claudia. Willing to conquer her, Joseph faces a scandalous secret, a man from Claudia's past, and an arranged marriage that threaten their path together.
