In January 1935, Ella Maillart leaves Peking with Peter Fleming, correspondent for the Times, to cross China from east to west and reach the forbidden oases of Sinkiang, cradle of an ancient culture of Armenian origin. The journey continues through the mountain passes of the Pamir and the Karakoram, used by mule caravans, to Kashmir; a clandestine crossing through a Chinese Turkestan with a Muslim majority in the midst of insurrection.
The work was originally published in 1937; this 2003 edition belongs to the Petite Bibliothèque Payot collection and includes a foreword by Nicolas Bouvier.
