«Ni putas ni sumisas» is the feminist essay by Fadela Amara, with the collaboration of Sylvia Zappi, published by Cátedra in paperback (184 pages, in Spanish).
The book recounts the movement of women from working-class neighbourhoods in France that used the slogan «Ni putas ni sumisas» to denounce sexism and male violence. It all stems from the murder of Sohane, an eighteen-year-old girl burned alive. It also analyses immigration, Muslim women, institutionalised feminism, secularism in schools and neighbourhoods turned into ghettos.
Third edition in the Feminismos collection. Translated from French; work originally published in 2003 as «Ni putes, ni soumises». Includes a prologue by Amelia Valcárcel and an epilogue by Paloma Alcalá and Oliva Blanco.
A read for those interested in feminism, sociology and immigration, with an analysis also designed for the Spanish and European context.
